Hot Fish To Go: Ikhlas Superb Seafood

So, last week, we were getting ready for our team meeting at work when my coworker was telling us about this really good place to get fried seafood at reasonable prices. Usually, I’m skeptical of something like this, but he was talking like it was the best around.  Now, if you know me, I’m a connoisseur of fried seafood, especially shrimp.  So I thought I’d give this place, Ikhlas Superb Seafood, a try.

Now, first off, this place is most certainly in what many would consider a rough neighborhood.  But adventurous foodies don’t (and shouldn’t) give a shit about that.  Also, this place is definitely a textbook example of a “hole in the wall” establishment.  Again, adventurous foodies don’t (and shouldn’t) give a shit about that.  All this is part of the place’s charm. Just go in knowing you aren’t in Buckhead or Midtown anymore.

So, I ordered 6 pieces of fried flounder, a half pound of jumbo fried shrimp and all this came with hush puppies, coleslaw, and french fries. I also grabbed a few of their doughnuts, since the guy behind the counter was really pushing it. He (jokingly) told me that my “ass would itch tomorrow” if I didn’t try one. We wouldn’t want that to happen, now would we?

So, I picked up my order, which was about $30 for everything and moseyed on back home to Decatur.  To my delight, the meal survived the cross-town drive home without getting cold or soggy, so +1 for them for smart packaging.  Now, here’s where they get a -20: I get home and open the box to fix my plate and “WHERE THE FUCK IS MY DAMN SHRIMP?!?!?”  The shrimp costs $12, once you add tax. When you’re still bouncing back financially from a long-term unemployment, $12 means a good deal to you, so naturally I felt some kind of way about them neglecting to put mine in the box. Just be mindful to check your order before you leave the premises.

The shrimp fiasco aside, nothing more than that $12 was wasted on this trip.  The meal was pretty good. The fish was breaded just right: not too heavy and not too light, and was fried golden. The fish also tasted pretty fresh and well-seasoned, so that’s a plus. Also, (and one of my Instagram followers can attest) they seem to give you much more fish than you ordered. As a matter of fact, I had thought they were just out of shrimp and they gave me more fish to make up for it, but apparently that wasn’t really the case.   The slaw, fries, and hush puppies on the side were pretty good, too.

I didn’t get a chance to try those doughnuts though, since the meal stuffed me.  But my ass isn’t itching, so that’s that
